Rewards In Heaven
The rewards we are encouraged to strive for, and the treasure we are to build
up in Heaven, are not part of a materialistic enterprise or some kind of status
symbol of our greatness. All of the rewards are attached to conditions of
some type (even though for some the condition is only being saved), and they
reflect not our efforts and works apart from God. They reflect our
relationship and obedience to God and His Word.
Proverbs 4:7-9
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting
get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee
to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament
of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee."
1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
"For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the
presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? For ye are our glory and joy."
Isaiah 62
"For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not
rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation
thereof as a lamp that burneth. And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness,
and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth
of the LORD shall name. Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the
LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God."
Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed
Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD
delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. For as a young man marrieth a
virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the
bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee. I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O
Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make
mention of the LORD, keep not silence, And give him no rest, till he establish,
and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.
The LORD hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I
will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the
stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured: But they
that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD; and they that have
brought it together shall drink it in the courts of my holiness. Go through, go
through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the
highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people.
Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the
daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him,
and his work before him. And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed
of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken."
2 Timothy 4:8
"Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord,
the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all
them also that love his appearing."
James 1:12
"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall
receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him."
1 Peter 5:1-7
"The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of
the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be
revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight
thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready
mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the
flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of
glory that fadeth not away.
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be
subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the
proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the
mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care
upon him; for he careth for you."
Revelation 2:10
"Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast
some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten
days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life."
Rev 3:10-12
"Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the
hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell
upon the earth. Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no
man take thy crown. Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my
God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God,
and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down
out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name."
1 John 5:1-6
"Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that
loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. By this we know
that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments
are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this
is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that
overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? This
is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by
water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit
is truth."
Revelation 2:7
"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To
him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the
midst of the paradise of God."
Revelation 2:11
"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He
that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death."
Revelation 2:17
"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To
him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a
white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he
that receiveth it."
Revelation 2:25-28
"But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. And he that overcometh,
and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they
be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the
morning star."
Revelation 3:5
"He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not
blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my
Father, and before his angels."
Revelation 3:21
"To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also
overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne."
Revelation 21:1-7
"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first
earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city,
new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned
for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the
tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be
his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall
wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither
sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things
are passed away.
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said
unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It
is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him
that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh
shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son."
None of the rewards or treasure one can receive is for service above and beyond
the call of duty. It is for doing what is expected of us. We certainly do not
deserve any reward, but it is the Father's good pleasure to reward us for doing
what we should be doing anyway. Obey, and be rewarded. Do not obey, and suffer
loss of reward. Those that speak of striving to build up treasure in Heaven and
gain rewards/crowns, etc., are all speaking of being in fellowship with the
Lord, close to Him, and obedient. There is no other way to receive anything.
Some will just make it through the door, and that will be the total sum of their
reward. Their life on Earth though will have reflected that they got everything
in measure according to their obedience and walk with the Lord.
It's not about us, but about God and how serious we are with regards to His word
and the things He expects of us. We need to be willing to yield to the guidance
and direction of the Holy Spirit and not attempt to chart our own course, to
trust in Him and learn the things He would teach us through His Word and in our
struggles in this life.
All born-again believers will make it to Heaven, but not all of them will be
given the same level of responsibility or authority. How serious you are right
now in this life about your relationship with God will carry over into the
Millennium and perhaps beyond. This life is short and temporary, so we should be
striving to know God and learn His Ways and obey Him now, because we will
be with Him for eternity. We must not get so entangled in the affairs of this
life that we miss the big picture. We have eternal life right now, and our
connection with God for all eternity is right now, and we should be living like
it right now.
Yep, we all screw up and fail. Some of us are very stubborn and take all the
long and difficult roads to get to the end of the lessons in life. The point
though is whether you are walking with the Lord or not, regardless of the
road traveled. We won't be made incorruptible until He changes our body, so this
whole life we will have struggles and trials. In all these things though we can
trust the Lord and lean upon Him. Really look at the people the Lord raised up
and used in the OT and the NT, and you will see that God loves to take the
imperfect and the weak and do marvelous things through them.
Praise the Lord!
